What is ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising?
ASA 106 is a serious advanced coastal cruising course where you live on a larger boat and will have the opportunity to build your seamanship skills.
Students move beyond basic coastal sailing and focus on planning and executing longer, more complex passages, including overnight and offshore-style navigation.
Pre-requisite: ASA 104 – ASA 105

How is it taught?
- 4 full days on board
- Theory on board and a lot of sailing

- Destination: Nearby islands (Cuttyhink, Martha’s vineyard, Block Island)
- 42 feet boat with 3 cabins and 2 heads

- Plan and execute overnight or multi-day coastal passages

Comfortable sailing around the bay doing dead reckoning and ready for the next step? Ready to be challenged with strong currents, fog, and tricky anchorages? Let’s sail to Martha’s Vineyard and the surrounding islands for 4 days and be mesmerized with the incredibly strong currents of Wood’s Hole, experience the serenity of sailing at night, and enjoy some fabulous seafood. The schedule is loosely structured as wind and tides dictate the actual daily destination…just like cruising!
You need to be ASA101, 103, 104 and 105 certified to enroll for ASA 106.
Why join ASA 106?
Half the folks that take this course are not interested in the certification… They just want to go sailing with a captain and visit a number of wonderful anchorages at a reasonable price! Folks often take this course more than once as everyone is different. As with any coastal cruising trip, we plan our next day’s journey factoring in the forecast wind and weather… No two trips are the same!
Learn on 42 feet sailboat
We teach ASA106 on the Bavaria 42, a German made sailboat designed for off-shore cruising. With three cabins and two bathrooms, we can easily accommodate up to 4 students on board. More info about the boat on our fleet page.

What will I be able to do with ASA 106?
ASA 106 will provide you with knowledge and experience to manage any boats on coastal water in any weather, night and day.
Will I have a chance to sail and have hands-on experience?
Yes. Narragansett Sailing School philosophy is to provide as much hands-on experience as possible. This class is 100% hands-on because you will spend four full days on board.
What happens if the weather is bad?
This class includes sailing in bad weather conditions so you will probably sail even if the weather is not great. And in reality most students want to sail in harsh conditions for their ASA 106 because they want to gain experience. However, we may cancel the class if the sailing conditions are too bad. In that case we will reschedule or refund you.
What do I need to bring?
Wear comfortable weather appropriate sport shoes and clothes, including water proof gears if necessary. In New England, weather can change very quickly even in the summer. Be prepared, bring water or energy drinks, sunglasses and sunscreen. More details here.
